For the second day in a row, the Israeli army claimed on Monday, 21 August, that its Iron Dome system downed a drone launched from Gaza Strip

In a press statement, the army said that the Iron Dome system was activated to down a suspected figure that had been launched over the sea of the coastal enclave and flew toward Israeli territory.

According to Israeli media outlets, the new statement came a day after the army shot down another drone on Sunday.

Israeli media reported that the aircraft was headed for the Eshkol area bordering Gaza.

Israel claimed last week to have thwarted an operation to smuggle drones into Gaza, a territory Israel has been blockading since 2007.

It said the drones were destined for Hamas, the Islamist group ruling the Gaza Strip.

Israel deployed drones over the Gaza Strip earlier this month after it arrested a senior member of the militant group Palestinian Islamic Jihad.

Last week, an Israeli drone fell in the Al-Zaytoun neighbourhood in the south of Gaza City, and it was seized by al-Qassam brigades, the armed wing of Hamas, an Islamist group ruling Gaza since 2007.

Officials of Hamas confirmed on various occasions that their movement insists on continuing their path of manufacturing, developing, and improving their weapons to defend their people against Israeli occupation.
