Istanbul governor issues 'reminder' on ban on public alcohol consumption

Istanbul’s governor issued a circular on Wednesday re-iterating a ban on the consumption of alcohol in public spaces, Istanbul-based news outlet Bianet reported on Wednesday.
Earlier reports on the circular suggested that a new ban had been implemented, however the governor’s office later clarified that the circular was a "reminder" of existing laws.
The ban applies to sale and consumption in "public beaches, shores, parks, picnic and recreation areas".
Turkey has no laws explicitly banning alcohol in public spaces, however Article 35 of the country's Misdemeanors Law prescribes fines for "individuals disrupting the peace of others while intoxicated". according to Bianet.
Advertising alcoholic beverages in shop windows is illegal in Turkey and liquor shops are also prohibited from selling alcoholic beverages after 10pm.
Despite lax enforcement of the 10pm restriction, Turkish authorities earlier this year raised the fine for breaking the law to between 215,000 ($8,059) - 1 million lira ($37,500).
In June, Turkey ranked highest on the Nanny State Index's ranking of Europe's worst places to drink, smoke, eat and vape.
