Lebanese pop singer George al-Rassi was killed in the early hours of Saturday in a shocking car crash as he returned home from a concert in northern Syria.

The only other person in the car during the crash near Lebanon's southern border was identified by local media as Zeina al-Merehbi, al-Rassi’s manager, who also died in the incident.

According to Lebanon 24, the car crashed into a dangerously unmarked central partition - a fact which has reportedly angered the al-Rassi family.

No other vehicles were involved in the incident, Lebanon’s National News Agency said Saturday.

Al-Rassi was reportedly driving the car at the time.

His sister, actress Nadine el-Rassi, broke the family’s silence after the news.

"You left us too early my brother. I had hoped we’d grow old together. Without you it feels like I’m in a forest full of wolves, with this life stretching out before me," she said.

High-profile Lebanese musicians and actors have shared their grief at al-Rassi’s unexpected death.

Fellow pop singer Ziad Khoury also paid his respects to the young star, saying "there are no words to express the pain and sadness… may God provide comfort to your family".

Syrian legend Georges Wassouf also offered his condolences.

"I can’t believe this morning’s terrible news that you’re gone, George. May god bring patience to your family and the woman who was beside you. Love to all those who love George al-Rassi," Wassouf said.
