A Palestinian doctor from the coastal enclave was killed on Sunday by a Russian airstrike in Ukraine, local sources said.

"Fadi Abu Shamallah, in his 40s, was killed by a Russian warplane while he was in his apartment in Ukraine," the sources, who were close to Abu Shamallah's family, said to The New Arab.

The sources added that the Palestinian doctor was a volunteer in the army of the Luhansk Republic and it is believed that the Russian army deliberately killed him.

The Ramallah-based Palestinian Foreign Ministry acknowledged that Abu Shamallah was in his apartment and had died from a Russian strike, but have no further information.

According to the Palestinian foreign ministry, around 4,000 Palestinians live in Ukraine. Since the beginning of the Russian invasion six months ago, the ministry has evacuated up to 3,000 of them so far.

The New Arab has attempted to speak to his father, but he requested no comment.

However, some relatives of his family, who are based in the al-Bureij refugee camp in central Gaza Strip, said the doctor arrived in Ukraine a decade ago and had planned to leave the country soon.
