A Palestinian man was killed on Monday after Israeli forces opened fire at him near the village of Deir Nizam, northwest of Ramallah, local reports said.

The man was identified as 33-year-old Bilal Qadah, according to the Palestinian health ministry.

Israeli forces allegedly fired at him after he allegedly threw a homemade explosive device towards their soldiers, Israeli media reported.

Head of the Deir Nizam Village Council, Nasr Mazhar, told The New Arab's Arabic language site Al Araby Al Jadeed that Israeli forces opened live fire on Qadah's vehicle at the southern entrance of the village near the illegal Halamish settlement.

Mazhar said Israeli forces sealed off the area, preventing even the ambulance crew from attending to the incident.

Perspectives

The incident adds to a surge in violence against Palestinians in the West Bank, which has been occupied by Israeli forces since the 1967 Six-Day War.

Eighteen Palestinians, including children, were killed in the territory since 3 July, the majority in a two-day Israeli raid on the northern city of Jenin.

The United Nations secretary-general, Antonio Guterres, said last week that Israel used "excessive force" as troops, backed by drone strikes and armoured bulldozers, targeted the densely-populated Jenin refugee camp.
