Palestinian teenager dies of wounds sustained in May from Israeli gunfire

A 17-year-old Palestinian died on Monday, two months after he was wounded in the neck by Israeli gunfire during clashes near the city of Ramallah in the occupied West Bank, Palestinian health authorities said.

The shooting occurred during one of numerous attacks by Israeli forces on Palestinian protesters in the West Bank, during the 11-day bombardment of Gaza Strip in May, the fourth Israeli attack on the impoverished enclave since Hamas was elected in 2007.

A statement from Palestinian health authorities said Youssef Nawaf died after a May 14 gunshot wound in the neck damaged his spinal cord, leaving him in critical condition.

At least 26 Palestinians were killed in the West Bank during the May Israeli attacks, according to the United Nations.

In Gaza, at least 254 people were killed were killed by Israeli bombardment, including 67 children and 39 women.

On Friday, another Palestinian youth - Mohammed Tamimi, 17 - was shot and killed by Israeli troops while protesting expansion of Israeli settlements in Nebi Saleh.

The village has been the scene of numerous demonstrations over the years against the illegal expansion of a nearby Jewish settlement.

Rights groups have accused Israeli forces of using "unnecessary and excessive force" and carrying out extrajudicial killings against Palestinians there.

"Many [Palestinians are] unlawfully killed by live ammunition or other excessive force when posing no imminent threat to life. Some of the unlawful killings appeared to be wilful, which would constitute war crimes," Amnesty International has said.
