A displaced person from Syria's Israeli-occupied Golan Heights has been killed by unknown gunmen in a camp in opposition-controlled Idlib province.

An armed group in a car killed Abdel Fattah Al-Obeid, according to activist and Idlib resident Mustafa Al-Ahmed, The New Arab's Arabic sister service Al-Araby Al-Jadeed reported on Saturday.

Al-Obeid was struck by several bullets in the head and chest in front of his tent in the Ghazal camp near the Syrian-Turkish border, Al-Ahmed said. The motivation for the killing was unknown.

Al-Ahmed said the assailants fled, with police carrying out investigations and alerting checkpoints belonging to the security arm of Hayat Tahrir Al-Sham (HTS), an extremist group that controls much of Idlib.

The incident came after a woman in her 50s was killed with a sharp object on 10 July by thieves who stole her gold jewellery and furniture in the city of Harem near the Syrian-Turkish border.

HTS-controlled areas have witnessed several murders in recent weeks.
