The head of a local council in northern Syria has survived an assassination attempt on Sunday, while his son was severely wounded in the attack.

A bomb planted in Khalil al-Hajj Osu's car exploded early on Sunday while his 14-year-old son Ibrahim was operating on the vehicle.

His son was transferred to a Turkish hospital in the area for treatment.

Osu is the municipal head of Rajo, a town in the Afrin district of the Aleppo governorate.

It was not clear who tried killing the official or why.

Several civilians have been killed and wounded since earlier this month in a series of explosions that targeted the region, under the control of mainly Turkish-backed rebel groups.

Ankara also maintains a military presence in the area.

While no side has claimed responsibility for the attacks, Turkey accuses Kurdish forces.
