US President Joe Biden on Thursday designated Qatar as a major non-NATO ally of the United States, fulfilling the promise that he had made to Qatar earlier this year, the White House said, according to The New Arab’s Arabic language site Al-Araby Al-Jadeed.

The designation is granted by the United States to close, non-NATO allies that have strategic working relationships with the US military.

Biden promised Qatar's emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, in January during a meeting at the White House that he would grant Qatar the special status, Al-Araby Al-Jadeed said.

The decision also comes against the backdrop of the recent move by the US to ban Russian oil and other energy imports as part of Washington’s response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Qatar, a major natural gas exporter, has been engaged in talks with Ukrainian officials over the conflict.

Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad received the Ukrainian president’s special envoy Bektum Rostam on Thursday, according to Qatari media reports.

During the meeting, they discussed developments of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and “peaceful and diplomatic ways” to resolve the conflict, according to reports.
