Arab social media users have circulated and commented on a video of a person of ambiguous gender in Mecca's grand mosque - the holiest site in Islam.

The short clip has been widely covered in Arabic-language media across the Middle East with headlines such as "woman wears men's pilgrimage clothing in Mecca".

The footage shows the person wearing the robes of ihram - the white robe male pilgrims must wear while at the religious site.

Police are seen standing next to the pilgrim.

"Is it permissible to photograph and defame someone behind his back and without their knowledge and spread it online? What was the photographer doing?" said one commenter.

Female pilgrims are not required to wear the white robes during the pilgrimage, which attracts millions during the holy month of Ramadan.
