The Moroccan women's football team will receive tens of thousands in bonuses after qualifying for the last 16 of the World Cup, with more than $100,000 each up for grabs as the tournament progresses.

Each of the Atlas Lionesses will receive $30,000 for participating in the group stage and $60,000 for progressing to the round of 16.  The money, which comes from a grant from FIFA, will also be topped up by incentives from the Moroccan Football Association.

"There is also significant financial reward awaiting the Moroccan national team players from the local federation, which may increase if they reach the quarter-finals —  excluding the FIFA grant and pocket money," a Royal Moroccan Football Federation source told The New Arab’s Arabic-language sister site, Al-Araby Al-Jadeed.

For the first time, FIFA has acted to ensure that individual players will receive the bonuses, as opposed to allowing the national football federations to disburse the funds at their discretion.

All 32 teams received an initial payment of $1.56 million for competing in this year's games.

While the Moroccan team can look forward to bonuses from FIFA and their national federation, this will not be the case for all teams.

On the eve of the tournament, England's Lionesses called off talks with the English Football Association (FA) after the governing body refused to top up the player bonuses.

Morocco's stunning World Cup comeback after losing 6-0 to Germany in their first game has revived the hopes that an Arab, African team may go all the way.

Morocco's next match will be on 8 August, when they will face France.
