Since October 7, places of worship in the Gaza Strip have not been spared from Israel's relentless bombardment and military campaign, even though thousands of Palestinians have sought refuge in these holy sites.
Gaza’s mosques and churches hold a historical, cultural, and spiritual significance to its people and Palestine as a whole.
However, like many of its heritage sites, holy places have been destroyed or severely damaged. At the time of writing, Israeli attacks have flattened at least 88 mosques in the Gaza Strip.
At the same time, three churches were targeted and have sustained significant damage - including St Porphyrius Church, regarded as the third-oldest operating church in the world and the heart of Gaza's Palestinian Christian community.
