A 15-year-old French Muslim girl has been banned from classes for wearing a long black skirt, which the school said "conspicuously showed religious affiliation".

Unsurprisingly, a Twitter storm swiftly swept around the social media world, under the hashtag #JePorteMaJupeCommeJeVeux - "I wear my skirt as I please."

A number of tweeters blamed the classroom ban on ideological trends within France - some described it as Islamophobia, others found it to be "secular madness".

There's also been a lot of talk about racism and sexual exploitation.

Many wondered where the voices of women's empowerment were in standing up for the girl, while emphasising exactly how not to measure a woman's worth..

The overwhelming majority, however, openly criticised France and its government for turning a blind eye to the school's ruling.

And speaking of jokes, we leave you with this...
